WHO IS A MENTOR?
This piece will serve as an eye opener to the previous misuse of the word 'mentor'.
The Oxford Learner's English Dictionary defined a mentor as a trusted adviser.
Over the years I have come to discover that most of the time we misuse the word 'Mentor' without paying much attention into the real meaning of the word.
Now going by the definition the Oxford dictionary gave, it is obvious that what we actually meant then when we say this person is my mentor is really very far from what the word actually meant.
From the foregoing definition, it is crystal clear that you can have more than one mentor in different aspect of your life. i.e a mentor in your career, another in your ministry, marriage etc.
It therefore means that, if mentor is a trusted adviser, there are some points you need to take note of from that definition; A mentor should be;
1. Somebody that lives an exmplary life worthy of emulation.
2. Somebody you have physical contact and relationship with.
3. Somebody in relatively the same career path with you.
4. Somebody that is always there to support you.
5. Somebody that has gone ahead of you, professionally, career wise etc. Simply put an expert.
6. Somebody you can always run to when you are confused, especially in a particular area of career, marriage/ relationship etc.
7.Somebody that is morally, intellectually upright.
8. Somebody that that can motivate you through your vision and encourage you that you can always win.
9. Somebody you trust. Trust is very important when it comes to mentorship, that is why the dictionary did not fail to mention it. You can only believe and do what a person tells you when you trust their judgement and advice.
10. Dependable adviser; your mentor should be somebody you can depend on. Somebody that helps to bring out the best in you!
In conclusion be the best you can be, learn to imitate the good of other people and not the negative things you see. So that you can be a better mentor to somebody else!
